Hachette Livre - Lean Six Sigma Programme August 2009
Early in 2009 we were asked to provide two Lean Six Sigma courses (Champions and Executives, and Green Belt) for the IT division of the world’s largest publisher. This was very successful and led to us being asked to develop a bespoke programme for their two UK distribution centres. The approach we developed and are currently implementing cascades training from the management team, to middle managers and supervisors, then team leaders and finally the operators through a train the trainer approach. The training is focused on the Lean toolset to enable them to start eliminating waste (Muda), deploying standard work and improving performance. The training uses one of each site’s value streams as the basis for all of the exercises so that the measurement, analysis and improvements are real. The delegates spend quite a lot of time in the workplace (Gemba) to see what actually happens. The training is ongoing but the proposed improvements (single piece flow and internal pull process to achieve next day delivery) already defined are so significant that the site Managing Director has committed to make the changes. The finance director recently commented that the training has created a palatable buzz around the place to change and improve in both the office as well as the shop floor.
The Economist – Balanced Scorecard Programme – July 2008
Early in 2008 we were providing a bespoke Business Process Management course for the Economist online which went well and we were asked if we could also assist the management team to define and implement a Balanced Scorecard. The scorecard would form the cornerstone of changes to implement a new strategy and improve management processes. Over a number of months we facilitated workshops with the management team to create a strategy map and develop a scorecard of objectives, measures and targets – numerous iterations before we captured the “story of the strategy” and rationalised the measures down to a manageable core. As the scorecard was being finalised we then moved to managing the change through communication and discussions with staff and other executives and managers in the Economist Group. This was followed by establishing new and changed management review activities such that strategy became the driver throughout the organisation. Whilst we were assisting in the development of the scorecard it became evident to the Publisher that the organisational structure didn’t fit with the strategy and we then assist in defining a new process based organisational structure which has been partially implemented.
